What Is Digital Eye Strain?
Digital eye strain is a type of eye discomfort that can occur after spending an extended period looking at a digital screen, like a phone, tablet, or computer. However, digital screens may be only a part of the problem, as the discomfort can also come from:
- Poor room lighting
- Improper workplace ergonomics
- Screen brightness
- Glare from light sources
However, eye strain can also occur for several other reasons, like reading small text or blinking less frequently.
Managing Your Symptoms
Some of the most common eye strain symptoms include:
- Watery eyes
- Redness
- Blurry vision
- Dry eyes
- Headaches
If you have a refractive error like astigmatism or hyperopia, you may have a higher risk of experiencing eye strain. However, there are a few different strategies you can use to alleviate your symptoms.
Eye Drops
Eye drops are a common strategy for managing eye strain. However, we always recommend speaking with our team before using any over-the-counter products.
Sometimes, we may recommend prescription eye drops if your symptoms are related to dry eye syndrome.
The 20-20-20 Rule
If you need quick relief, the 20-20-20 rule can give your eyes a small break so you can get back to work with more comfortable vision.
Every 20 minutes, spend 20 seconds looking at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away. This exercise will give your eyes a chance to blink and readjust before you start working again.
Ergonomic Adjustments
Simple changes to your workplace can also help prevent and manage digital eye strain symptoms. We recommend:
- Placing your computer monitor about an arm’s length away and 20 degrees below eye level.
- Matching your screen brightness and contrast settings to match the room you’re in.
- Minimizing sources of glare from your screen by having windows at a right angle to your screen, not in front of or behind your screen.
- Keeping your screen clean from dust and dirt to help support your visual clarity.
- Anti-fatigue lenses
