MacuMira Treatment For Dry AMD

At Downtown Vision Care, we’re committed to helping you preserve your sight and enjoy clear, comfortable vision at every stage of life.

That’s why we’re proud to offer MacuMira, a dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) treatment. This noninvasive therapy uses a gentle microcurrent to stimulate retinal cells at the back of the eye, improving blood flow to the macula, a part of the retina necessary for central vision.

MacuMira treatment also supports the retinal pigment epithelium’s (RPE) health, which helps clear away waste products that can build up and damage the eye.

Through a series of 32-minute sessions, MacuMira can help slow the progression of AMD and prevent significant vision loss.

What Is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

Macular degeneration leads to the thinning of the macula, a crucial part of the retina responsible for clear central vision and detail detection, such as recognizing faces or reading. However, it doesn’t affect peripheral (side) vision.

It’s often called age-related macular degeneration (AMD) because it’s commonly related to aging. It’s the leading cause of blindness in North America for adults over 55.

What Causes AMD?

The likelihood of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) often increases with age. However, several other factors can increase the risk of AMD or lead to the earlier onset of symptoms, including:

  • Extensive UV exposure
  • High blood pressure
  • Arteriosclerosis
  • Smoking
  • Family history of AMD

The 2 Types of AMD: Dry & Wet

There are 2 forms of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). MacuMira is formulated to help manage dry AMD, aiming to halt its progression and prevent the onset of the wet form of the condition.

Dry AMD

Dry AMD is the most common type. In its early stages, dry AMD typically presents no symptoms. However, as it progresses to the intermediate stage, you can experience mild symptoms, including:

  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty seeing in low-light conditions

This progression occurs gradually. Over time, dry AMD can develop into the more severe form known as wet AMD.

Wet AMD

Wet AMD is an aggressive, rapid progression of the condition. Weak blood vessels under the macula can start leaking or bleeding suddenly, impacting vision and eye health.

Symptoms can include:

  • Blurred vision
  • A blank or empty spot in your central field of view
  • Colors appearing faded or dim
  • Difficulty seeing under low-light conditions

Treatment for AMD

While there’s no cure for age-related macular degeneration, early intervention can help lower your risk and manage symptoms. Our goal is to help you slow progression and prevent severe symptoms.

Comprehensive eye exams are key to detecting changes in your macula, allowing us to monitor for eye disease signs. With close monitoring, we can apply strategies and treatments such as MacuMira.

Schedule your next eye exam today to learn more about your risk for AMD and how we can help you manage it.
