How to Remove Scratches from Sunglasses

Sunglasses are more than just a fashion statement—they are essential for protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays. But what happens when your trusty shades get scratched?

Those tiny marks can obscure your vision and take the shine off your favorite pair. Fortunately, with the right techniques, you can minimize or even remove scratches from your sunglasses.  Here’s a guide to help you keep your sunglasses in tip-top shape.

How to Remove Scratches from Prescription Glasses

Here is a step-by-step guide to removing scratches on your sunglasses if they are glass lenses:

  1. Gather Your Materials: You’ll need a microfiber cloth, lens cleaner, and a non-abrasive toothpaste or baking soda paste.
  2. Clean the Lenses: First, use a lens cleaner and a microfiber cloth to remove dirt or debris from the lenses.
  3. Apply Toothpaste or Baking Soda Paste: Gently rub a small amount of toothpaste or baking soda paste onto the scratched area using a soft, circular motion. Be careful not to press too hard, as this could cause further damage.
  4. Rinse & Dry: After a few minutes, rinse the lenses with cool water and dry them with a clean microfiber cloth. Make sure all toothpaste or baking soda paste is removed.
  5. Inspect the Lenses: Check to see if the scratches have diminished. If they’re still visible, you can repeat this process, but avoid doing it too often, as this can wear down the coating on your lenses.

How To Prevent Scratches on Sunglasses

Preventing scratches on your sunglasses is the best strategy for keeping your sunglasses in great shape.

Store your sunglasses in a hard, protective case whenever you’re not wearing them. This will protect them from being crushed or scratched by other items in your bag or pocket. Always handle your sunglasses with clean hands and avoid placing them face down on any surface.

You should also make sure that you clean your sunglasses properly. Avoid using paper towels, tissues, or your clothing to wipe the lenses, as these materials can cause micro-scratches. If the lenses are not wet and rinsed before you wipe them, any small particle on the lens can scratch the lens.  If the cloth is dirty or has any gritty particles on it, it can smear or scratch the lens. Instead, use a proper cloth like a microfibre cloth or clean lint free towel.

How To Properly Clean Your Sunglasses

  1. Rinse with Water: Begin by rinsing your sunglasses under lukewarm water to remove dust and debris.
  2. Apply Lens Cleaner: Spray a small amount of lens cleaner onto both sides of the lenses.
  3. Wipe with a Microfiber Cloth: Gently wipe the lenses in a circular motion using a microfiber cloth. Avoid pressing too hard.
  4. Clean the Frames: Don’t forget to clean the frames, especially around the nose pads and hinges where dirt can accumulate.
  5. Inspect for Residue: Check for any remaining smudges or residue and give them a final wipe if needed.

Is Glass Etching Cream Safe for My Sunglasses?

Glass etching cream is used to remove deep scratches from glass surfaces. This cream is designed to remove the outermost layer of glass, and, with it, superficial scratches. While this method can be effective on some types of glass, it is not recommended for sunglasses.

Most sunglasses, especially those with prescription lenses, have special coatings that can be damaged by glass etching cream. These coatings are essential for reducing glare and protecting your eyes from UV rays, so using glass etching could compromise your lenses’ effectiveness. It is always better to stick with safer, less abrasive methods to treat scratches on your sunglasses.

When Should I Replace My Sunglasses?

Knowing when to replace your sunglasses is just as important as knowing how to care for them. If your lenses are so scratched that your vision is impaired, it’s time to invest in a new pair. Scratches that distort your view can lead to eye strain and reduce the effectiveness of UV protection.

You should also consider replacing your sunglasses if the frames are damaged or if the lenses have become discoloured or cloudy over time. Even with the best care, sunglasses will eventually wear out, and replacing them ensures your eyes are always well-protected.

If you’re not totally confident your sunglasses need replacing, consult your eye doctor for their professional recommendations.
